Philippine Azkals play host to Nepal side Tuesday night

By Cedelf P. Tupas (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

The Philippines may be 31 places behind 135th-ranked Nepal in the international football rankings, but their coaches think both countries are running on parallel bearings as far as the development of their national teams are concerned.

“We need more games because the more games you play, the more you get better,” said Nepal’s English coach Graham Paul Roberts.

“We need exposure against the stronger teams in Asia,” said the Azkals’ German coach Michael Weiss.

Hoping to sharpen their game for more important battles ahead, the Philippines and Nepal meet tonight in an international friendly at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Kickoff is at 7 PM with the Azkals looking to come out strong with Europe-based players Jerry Lucena, Dennis Cagara, Paul Mulders, Jason de Jong, Rob Gier, Ray Jonsson and Neil Etheridge joining forces with Manila-based Aly Borromeo, Chieffy Caligdong and Phil and James Younghusband.

It will be the fifth match in 11 days for the Azkals, who won one match and drew against Hong Kong and Chinese-Taipei in the Long Teng Cup in Kaohsiung last week and lost to Singapore, 0-2, in another friendly last Friday.

The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) said the friendly will give the Azkals an opportunity to boost their FIFA rankings with a full squad. The match comes within an international football break when clubs are inclined to release players to their national teams.

At the prematch press conference Monday, Weiss promised an improved performance from his side.

But the Azkals’ attack suffered a blow as Fil-Spanish striker Angel Guirado has been ruled out of the clash because of an ankle injury.

The Azkals will actually get a glimpse of what to expect in the AFC Challenge Cup next year in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu.

Nepal and the Philippines are two of eight teams that qualified for the tournament, which stakes a spot in the 2015 Asian Cup.

“We saw glimpses of good football (from Nepal),” said Weiss. “They lost against North Korea which is not a big surprise. But it will be a totally different match tonight. We expect a stubborn and resistant side.”

Roberts, a former England international who captained Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, expects a tough test for his young side.

“I think they (Philippines) are a very good side,” said Roberts.

Resilient Cagara boosts Azkals

By Cedelf P. Tupas (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

Dennis Cagara is as resilient as they come.

Injuries may have left the Fil-Danish on the freezer for most of the past four years.

Finally at 100 percent, he’s hoping to return to his old, brilliant form and help take the Philippine Azkals to greater heights.

“I’m not as quick as I used to be,” said the 26-year-old Cagara, who once completed a 30-meter sprint in 3.2 seconds during a drill before the injury bug hit him.

“But I have a lot of experience. I’m willing to take responsibility and be a positive influence in the team.”

Cagara’s career has gone up-and-down after a spate of injuries forced him to miss two years of action.

But instead of sulking and quitting the sport altogether, the leftback who made his German Bundesliga debut as a 19-year-old against powerhouse Bayern Munich, soldiered on, hoping to make up for lost time.

It’s the kind of no-nonsense mentality he hopes will further boost the Azkals’ improvement.

“It’s been difficult these past few years,” said Cagara, who has hopped on from one club to another in Denmark after an impressive stint with Hertha, which he helped stave off relegation from the Bundesliga, in 2004.

“I still believe I think that I can go to the level where I want to go,” added Cagara, whose father hails from Dulag, Leyte.

Cagara’s addition not only gives the Azkals a solid cover at the problematic leftback role but also more attacking juice.

A player with a penchant to go on overlapping runs, Cagara gives the Azkals another threat on the left aside from Chieffy Caligdong.

Cagara said the Azkals can only get better in the years to come with a solid core. Fellow Fil-Danish player Jerry Lucena agrees.

“I saw a lot of development in the team,” said Lucena who missed the World Cup Qualifers because of club commitments. “It’s only going to get better.”

“We believe in the team that’s why we are here,” said Cagara.

Philippines Azkals vow ‘to protect Rizal’ vs Nepal

By Cedelf P. Tupas (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

MANILA – Boosted by the arrival of experienced defender Rob Gier, the Philippine Azkals will be out to protect their homefield when they take on Nepal tomorrow in a FIFA-sanctioned international friendly at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

“We’ve worked so hard to finally get this chance (of playing at home), so we’ll do our best to protect Rizal,” said co-skipper Chieffy Caligdong, who has scored four of the Azkals’ last five goals in their past four matches.

The 29-year-old left winger recalled that last year, the Azkals were forced to play a “home” match in Indonesia because no venue was ready when the team went on a historic run to the Suzuki Cup semifinals.

“For us, it’s just a rare chance of playing at home that’s most important,” said Caligdong in Filipino.

Fil-Danish standouts Dennis Cagara and Jerry Lucena are also primed for their home debut.

Cagara and Lucena missed the 2014 World Cup Asian Qualifiers because of club commitments and are raring to produce a quality performance for the home fans.

“It’s always special playing at home,” said Cagara, who, at 26, is already a veteran in European leagues, having played in top-flight tournaments in Germany.

“Most of our teammates (in the Azkals) have shared their stories of how good the feeling is playing in Rizal,” added Cagara.

The match, set at 7 p.m., will mark the first time in 14 years that the Philippines will be hosting an international team for a friendly.

And with their last home match ending in a 1-3 loss to Kuwait last July, the Azkals are expected to go full throttle against the Nepalese.

“We can’t just allow Nepal to come over here and dominate us,” said team manager Dan Palami. “We are not the favored team, so we’re hopeful that we would get all the support at Rizal.”

Gier, who also serves as consultant and scout for the team, is expected to make his return at central defense after missing the Long Teng Cup and the 0-2 loss against Singapore last Friday.

Fil-Dutch player Paul Mulders said the match against Nepal will give him the opportunity to make up for what he felt was a so-so performance against Singapore.

“I wasn’t happy with my performance—I thought I played like a girl,” said Mulders.

Azkals on parade as UFL kicks off – Guirado debut

By Cedelf P. Tupas (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

MANILA – Filipino-Spanish striker Angel Guirado will make his United Football League debut when Global FC faces Stallions Saturday at the start of the UFL Cup at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Guirado, the national player who saw action for Spanish third division team CD Ronda last season, is expected to be the linchpin of the Global attack along with fellow Azkal Misagh Bahadoran and Sudanese scoring machine Izo El-Habbib.

Guirado’s debut isn’t the only first marking the Cup competition opening Saturday.

For the first time since the league started three years ago, the UFL will have live television coverage after agreeing to a five-year deal with TV5.

Bunched in Group C, which is considered the tournament’s Group of Death, Global and Stallions face off at 4 p.m., after the parade of teams and opening ceremonies starting at 2:30 p.m.

Kaya FC collides with Team Schwarz in a Group D duel at the University of Makati pitch at 7 p.m.

United Football League UFL Cup logoThe Cup competition, which will serve as a gateway for teams bidding to make the first division of the league starting January, has lured 28 teams.

Global further strengthened its lineup during the off-season with the acquisition of veteran Japanese midfielder Yu Hoshide, who has played professionally in the United States and Trinidad and Tobago.

Former national players Ruben Doctora and Jason Cordova banner the Stallions side, which will have a slew of South Koreans who helped them reach the semifinals of the National Club Championships.

Kaya will be powered by high-profile players in Azkals skipper Aly Borromeo, Anton del Rosario, Nate Burkey and Jason Sabio in its lineup.

The 28 teams have been divided into seven groups with the top two squads from each group advancing to the Round of 16. The two No. 3 teams with the best records will claim the remaining two Round of 16 berths.

Singapore fielding top team against Philippine Azkals on October 7

BY BONG PEDRALVEZ (Malaya)

SINGAPORE will field its A team against the Philippines when the Lions host the Azkals in a friendly match tomorrow at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

The Football Association of Singapore yesterday posted on its website the composition of its 23-man squad that will face the Filipinos, who will go into the game fresh from their runner-up finish in the Long Teng Invitational Cup in Kaohshiung, Taiwan last Tuesday.

The friendly will serve as a tune-up match for Singapore, which faces Jordan in a crucial Asian Word Cup third-round qualifying match next week. The Singaporeans lost to China 1-2 last Sept. 2.

Among the notable Singapore players to watch is 28-year-old goalkeeper Lionel Lewis, who was cited as the Most Valuable Player of the 2004 Tiger Cup, as the Asean football championships was then known.

The 6-foot-1 goalie, who made his national team debut in 2002, was also nominated for the 2006 Asian Footballer of the Year, the only Southeast Asian player so far to be considered for the prestigious award.

Singapore also boasts a dangerous pair of naturalized players–British-born defender David Bennett, 33, and former Serbian national and prolific striker Alexsandar Duric, 41.

Bennett, who was naturalized in 2002, is the most-capped of the Lions with 104 and was a mainstay of the national team that won the 2004 and 2007 Tiger Cups. He also won four championships with the Singapore Armed Forces Football Club in the S-League.

The eldest player in the team, Duric is still considered a scoring machine in the S-League with more than 300 goals and is a darling of Singapore football fans. Since making his Singapore team debut in 2007, the striker leads the squad with a total of 15 markers.

Another Lions to watch is former Shanghai, China native and defender Shi Jaiyi, 28, who joined the Singaporean side in 2005 and was also a prominent member of the squad that won the 2007 Tiger Cup.

Under-23 Philippine Azkals prove worth; Caligdong earns Golden Booth

By Cedelf P. Tupas (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

KAOHSIUNG—The vital roles played by Under-23 standouts in the Philippine Azkals’ second place finish in the Long Teng Cup should augur well for the country’s bid for a first medal in Men’s football in the Southeast Asian Games.

SEA Games-bound players Roland Muller, Jeff Christiaens, Neckson Leonora and Carli De Murga all made their senior debuts for the Azkals in the four-nation tournament won by Hong Kong Tuesday night.

“It’s a good sign that the Under-23 players can cope with the pressure of playing against senior teams of other countries, even if they are not at the level of the SEA Games teams,” said Dan Palami, who also manages the Under-23 team.

The Azkals blanked Macau, 2-0, after drawing with Hong Kong (3-3) and Chinese-Taipei (0-0) in the Long Teng Cup.

Chieffy Caligdong sparkled for the Azkals with four goals in the tournament that brought his international total to six goals for the year and 14 in his career.

Caligdong, who shrugged off injuries to score both goals against Macau, emerged the top scorer for the tournament, earning the Golden Boot trophy.

“Chieffy has been very consistent in this campaign. He just comes out and proves that you can count on him,” said Palami, who said the positives from the campaign have cushioned the impact of not winning the tournament.

“We would have wanted to win, but if you put things in the proper perspective, there are so many positives in this campaign,” said Palami.

Golden Boot winner Caligdong lifts Azkals over Macau

By Roy Moore, InterAKTV

With two goals in the second half, Chieffy Caligdong towed the Philippine national men’s football team to a victory over Macau Tuesday night at the 2011 Long Teng Cup. Showing his quality, the winger from Iloilo lifted the team by the scruff of its neck to ensure that the Azkals leave the competition with a victory, improving on last year’s haul with five points in three games.

Caligdong’s goals powered the Philippines to a second place finish in the competition, after Hong Kong surprisingly recorded the biggest victory of the tournament against Taiwan in the final game, destroying the hosts, 6-0. With Taiwan falling apart, Hong Kong was able to retain its title with seven points. The Philippines finished with five points after a win and two draws, while Taiwan had four points. Macau finished at the bottom after losing three games, as it did last year.

In the match against Macau, Caligdong entered the match as a substitute in the second half to the roar of the crowd, before making an immediate impact when he cut inside after a trademark dribble on the wing to strike the ball against the post.

Attacking intent

Long Teng CupClearly showing his attacking intent, Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss pushed his team further forward and switched the formation, with Caligdong playing as a striker for much of the half. The tactical change paid dividends when a Mark Hartmann free-kick found Caligdong unmarked at the back post, and the Iloilo native finished the rebound in the 58th minute after the Macanese goalkeeper Ho Man Fai made a good first save.

The Azkals hoped that the floodgates would open, but were only able to manage one more goal. It was Caligdong who killed the game off in the 87th minute, with Hartmann again providing the assist with a chipped through ball. Taking the pass on his chest, Caligdong set himself to drill the ball low into the right hand corner.

Caligdong could have had a hat trick if not for blazing over from only a few yards out, when Phil Younghusband played him in during injury time. But with four goals, Caligdong came away with the tournament’s Golden Boot award, an honor for the top scorer of the competition.

The Azkals were missing Angel Guirado, who was out due to suspension. The creative spark in the middle of the field fell to Hartmann, who surprisingly started — and played 90 minutes — a day after getting benched and being involved in a Twitter controversy. Weiss’ diplomacy and mind games seemed effective, as the Filipino-Briton Hartmann went on to assist on both of Caligdong’s goals.

First half woes

Early in the match, the Azkals bombarded Macau’s goal, but only managed to fashion one clear-cut chance. With 71 percent of the possession, the Azkals were clearly the dominant force, but building up the play from the back, they opted for too many long balls.

The best chance of the first half fell to Ian Araneta, after a bursting run and delicate through-ball from Jerry Christiaens on the 28th minute. But Araneta, the top scorer for the Philippines in last year’s Long Teng Cup, failed to open his account this time around, as he saw his shot tipped round the post by a fine save from Macau keeper Ho Man Fai.

Macau threatened late in the half after Leong Ka-hang was sent through and shot for the first time just outside the area, only to watch his shot shave the crossbar.

Phil Younghusband frequently drifted wide, and the new signee of the Loyola Meralco Sparks FC was able beat the defense cross into the box. But with only Araneta to aim for, Macau’s center back were able to cope with the aerial threat.

Young guns steps up

While the overall feeling will be one of slight frustration, as the Azkals failed to hit top gear and the dream of winning the Long Teng Cup faded, there are certainly positives to take from the game. The performances of 22-year-old Neckson Leonora, 21-year-old Jason De Jong and 23-year-old Roland Müller will give great hope for the Philippine side in the upcoming Under-23 tournament at the SEA games.

But it was 20-year-old Jeffrey Christiaens’ performance that stood out most. With some great skill flicking the ball past several defenders and beating his marker on numerous occasions, he provided the best chance of the first half to Araneta while constantly offering a threat on the left wing.

Prior to the game, Christiaens has earned comparisons to Caligdong, although the Fil-Belgian’s skill differs in offering a fluid passing and moving style with more technically skilled tricks, compared to the dynamic, raw speed of the veteran internationalist.

But the presence of the two men could certainly give the Philippines wings who offer distinctly dangerous threats on the flanks.

What’s next

With only two defeats in the last ten games, the Philippines go into the friendlies against Singapore and Nepal with the strongest team it has ever had in recent generations. Though this was the Azkals’ first win in five games, the team remains a difficult force to beat with five draws and three wins in the last ten games, only losing to highly-ranked Kuwait.

With Stephan Schrock, Dennis Cagara, Jerry Lucena, Ray Jonsson and Manny Ott returning to action, the Philippines will be on full display against Singapore. Speaking for the last year of the potential of the Azkals, the team now has an opportunity to turn that into reality, as it looks to advance and become challengers in Southeast Asia. Against three-time Suzuki Cup champions Singapore on October 7, the Azkals could do just that.

Philippines finishes 2nd in 2011 Long Teng Cup

Despite a knee injury, Chieffy Caligdong came up with crucial goals to lead the Philippine Azkals to a 2-0 victory over Macau in the 2011 Long Teng Cup.

The Filipino winger, who sat out the first half due to his injury, struck his first goal in the 58th minute off a pass by Mark Hartmann.

Hartmann floated in a free kick towards Caligdong, who went in for a goal attempt.

His initial try was saved by Macau’s goal keeper but he went after the ball and scored on the follow up.

Caligdong slid in another goal in the 87th minute, again off a pass from Hartmann.

Caligdong received the ball with his chest then went for the strike to make it 2-0 for the Philippines.

The Azkals had a lot of ball possessions in the first half, but just could not convert against Macau.

Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss later decided to let Caligdong play, and he nearly had a goal early in the second half.

Philippine Football Federation PFF logoCaligdong almost pulled off a hat trick (3 goals in a game) in the first minute of the injury time, but missed on his attempt.

In the end, the Azkals had 27 shots at the goal against Macau’s 8. Ten of those shots were on target.

The Azkals also enjoyed 67% of the ball possession, while Macau only had 33%.

The Philippines eventually finished 2nd in the tournament.

Hong Kong scored a total of 7 points to retain the title. Chinese Taipei settled for 3rd place with 4 points, while scoreless Macau ended up at 4th.

Caligdong was declared the “Golden Boot” winner of Long Teng Cup with 4 goals. He duplicated Ian Araneta’s feat in the 2010 edition of the tournament.
