AFF Women’s Championship 2011: Malditas settle for a 2-2 draw against Malaysia

VIENTIANE (21 Oct 2011) – Thailand came back from a goal down to beat Myanmar 3-1 as 10-women Philippines battled to a 2-2 draw in the final Group B match of the AFF Women’s Championship 2011.

With the win, Thailand will take on hosts Laos in the semi-finals while Myanmar will entertain Vietnam in the other tie.

In the match at the National Stadium, both the Philippines and Malaysia were eager to avoid the wooden spoon tag.

And while the Malaysians were attempting to exert control, it was the Philippines who nailed the first goal of the game when Kathleen Rodriguez capitalised on a Malaysian keeper Roszaini Bakar‘s mistake to slot into an open goal.

But the loss of captain Marielle Benitez at the end of the first half would soon turn the tide in Malaysia’s favour despite the score being 1-0 to the advantage of the Philippines.

Three minutes after the restart, Malaysia took advantage of a poor defensive clearance from the Philippines for captain Angela Kais to score the equaliser.

Philippine Women's National Football Team MalditasTen minutes later, the Malaysian girls nailed their second goal off striker Fatin Azmi.

But just when Malaysia thought that they had the three points in the bag, they conceded a penalty when defender Malini Nordin was faulted for bringing in down Samantha Nierras inside the box.

Samantha had little trouble in blasting the ball to the top right hand corner of the Malaysian goal for the all-important equaliser.

AFF Women’s Championship 2011: Thailand defeated Philippines 5-1

VIENTIANE (19 Oct 2011) – Thailand picked up the full six points after two matches with a 5-1 thrashing of the Philippines of the AFF Women’s Championship 2011 at the National Stadium.

Following up from their 8-1 humiliation of Malaysia in the opening match two days ago, the Thais were playing very much at the same level and showed no sign of letting up.

In the tenth minute, captain Junpen Seesraum nailed the opener with a stinging shot that came off the crossbar before crossing the line into goal.

The Philippines tried to move the ball forward but with them having difficulty to win the midfield battle, the afternoon was always going to be a long one despite the several ‘imported’ players on their side.

Some sustained pressure afterwards, saw Thailand finally getting down to business once again where in the 29th minute, Kanjana Sung-Jeon cut in through from the right, before putting the ball away past the reach of Philippines custodian Inna Palacios.

Philippine Women's National Football Team MalditasA minute to the end of the first half, it was 3-0 with a fine effort from Sunisa Srangthaisong from inside the box.

In a three minute blitz, midfielder Nisa Romyen nailed two goals on a trot to put Thaiand comfortably in front and in total control as they took their feet off the pedal.

The Thai camp then made several substitutions to allow the lesser players the chance to see action and this included introducing striker Taneekarn Dangda – the sister to Thai national striker Teerasil – to the fray.

With Thailand on cruise control, the Philippines managed to squeeze one goal in when a frantic chase for clearance allowed Samantha Nierras to head in the ball for the final score line.

AFF Women’s Championship 2011: Close win for Myanmar against Philippines

VIENTIANE (17 Oct 2011) – Myanmar scored a close 2-0 win over the Philippines as Thailand showed their pedigree with an 8-1 roasting of Malaysia on the second match day of the AFF Women’s Championship 2011 here at the National Stadium.

Myanmar, fielding a side which is being moulded for the SEA Games in 2013, were not expecting the Philippines to be much of a challenge.

“Sure we were expecting to score lots of goals but the Philippines have improved a lot and that made it tough for us,” said Yoshinori Kumada, the chief coach of Myanmar.

“We have to improve obviously from this first game where although the team played to instruction, we just did not score enough goals and we have to remedy that for the next match.”

Despite scoring the early goal in the fourth minute when My Nilar Htwe capitalised on a defensive error, the Myanmar girls found Philippines a hard nut to crack when the latter held out for long periods.

They even tried to catch Myanmar on the break but the Philippines girls just did not have enough pace to make things happen.

Philippine Women's National Football Team MalditasThe closest they came to scoring a goal was a freekick at the half hour mark but the swerving shot from Natasha Alquiros flew just over the crossbar.

That failure to score saw My Nilar scoring the second goal for herself and also for Myanmar when she knocked the ball in from the far post off a cross from the right.

Myanmar stepped up the tempo in the second half but either through some fortunate defending or just plain hard work, the Philippines stood their ground all the way to the finish.

AFF Women’s Championship 2011: Heather Cooke to shore up Philippine defence in Laos

Experienced defender Heather Cooke will be the heartbeat of the Philippines women’s defensive backline for the AFF Women’s Championship 2011 in Vietiane, Laos next month.

Cooke is but one of several foreign-based players in the squad where her experience of having plated for Loyola Marymount in the United States, will hopefully make the difference to the side which lost all their matches in the same competition in 2009.

“I’m the kind of player who will give everything for the team for 90 minutes,” said the 22-year-old defender, who had previously played four seasons in the NCAA in the US.

And at 5-foot-9, the towering presence of Cooke for the backline will give chief coach Ernie Nierras ‘options that they never had before.’

The squad that will compete in Vientiane on 16-25 October 2011 will have an average age of just 20-years-old.

Philippine Women's National Football Team MalditasTwo years ago in Myanmar, the Philippines lost all their matches – a 0-11 lost to Vietnam, 0-14 to Australia and then 1-5 to Myanmar B.

“Now is the time to shine for us,” said Nierras this week.

“Hopefully, this (tournament) will jumpstart women’s football same as what happened with the men’s team.”

The captaincy of the Philippines women’s team will go to Marielle Benitez.

Philippine Malditas return to action in Laos on October 16-25

By Cedelf P. Tupas (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

The Philippine National women’s football team comes out of a two-year hiatus when it sees action in the ASEAN Football Championship slated October 16 to 25 in Vientiane, Laos.

Drawing inspiration from the feat of the men’s team which made heads turn with a semifinal finish in the Suzuki Cup last year, the squad, collectively known as the Malditas, is looking to improve after losing all three games in the tournament two years ago.

The Malditas have not played since October14, 2009 when they lost 0-11 to Vietnam in Myanmar. That team also lost to Australia, 0-14, and Myanmar B, 1-5, in the same tournament.

Because they haven’t been playing international matches the past two years, the Malditas have even lost their FIFA ranking. The Malditas were pinned at 128 in November last year, their lowest ranking in history.

Philippine Women's National Football Team MalditasBut with a stronger squad playing next month in the Laos capital where the men’s team also started its amazing semifinal run in the Suzuki Cup, the Malditas’ status could change soon.

Coach Ernie Nierras is confident that the Malditas can put up a tougher stand this time.

“Now is the time to shine for us,” Nierras told the Inquirer. “Hopefully, this (tournament) will jumpstart women’s football same as what happened with the men’s team.”

Part of Nierras’ optimism stems from the inclusion of several foreign-based players in the squad, including Fil-American Heather Cooke, a former Division 1 player at Loyola Marymount, who traces her roots in Iloilo.

The 22-year-old Cooke, who starred in the reality show “Real World” on MTV in the United States, is expected to shore up the Malditas’ backline.

Nierras said that with the 5-foot-9 Cooke’s presence gives the team “options that they never had before.”

Height, though, isn’t just Cooke’s best asset.

“I’m the kind of player who will give everything for the team for 90 minutes,” Cooke, who played four seasons in the NCAA, told the Inquirer in an interview shortly after arriving Tuesday night.

And with a team whose average is 20, Cooke’s experience will come in handy as the Malditas gear up for the tough grind in Laos.

In preparation for the tournament, the Malditas have also played matches against men’s teams in the “Ang Liga.”

Marielle Benitez will still skipper the squad which also boasts of former UAAP Most Valuable Players Samantha Nierras and Stephanie Peasant, US-based Patrice Impelido, Fil-Canadian Mallory Dayot, Germany-based Cristina Keuter and Lorrene Bayani and Nenita Burgess from Australia.

Also part of the team are Inna Palacios, Maan Del Carmen, Louella Amamio, Isabella Fernando,Jowee Barruga, Marice Magdolot, Natasha Alquiros, Nikki Regalado, Joma Clemente, Bettina Yang, Jane Pacana, Camille Rodriguez, Aiza Mondero, Zipporah Luna, Marie Magdolot, Pricilla Rubio, Kyra Tagbo and Angel Metillo.
