SEA Games-bound Azkals U-23 not taking foes lightly

By Cedelf P. Tupas (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

MANILA, Philippines—The Under-23 Philippine Azkals may have landed in the weaker group of the Southeast Asian Games football competition, but that doesn’t mean making the semifinals for the first time in 20 years will be a cakewalk for the national squad in Indonesia.

The Filipinos face Vietnam on November 3 at the start of Group B action at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.

Also in the Azkals’ group are Myanmar, Laos, Timor Leste and Brunei.

“A lot of people think that it’s seemingly easy,” said Palami of their bracket. “I think what we should realize is that teams like Timor and Laos have actually built very good youth programs for the past few years.”

Azkals coach Michael Weiss echoed Palami’s sentiment, saying that the draw only looks “favorable” at first sight.

Under 23 Philippine Azkals pilipinas futbol“We cannot just thrash Laos and Myanmar like there’s no tomorrow,” Weiss said.

“The first match will determine where we will go. I hope we can play with a compact and aggressive style against Vietnam.”

The Philippines will actually be seeing action in the SEA Games football competition for the first time since 2005 when it won one match and lost two games.

The country has not reached the semifinals of the event since 1991 when the biennial meet was held in Manila.

Palami said they are still working on including goalkeeper Neil Etheridge on the SEA Games squad, after the Filipino-British goalkeeper was omitted from the initial list over doubts of his availability for the tournament.

‘Favorable’ SEA Games draw for U23 Philippine Azkals

By Cedelf P. Tupas (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

The Philippines landed in a “favorable” group in the Southeast Asian Games football competition next month with the Under-23 Azkals ending up in the company of 2009 losing finalist Vietnam and semifinalist Laos.

Myanmar and lightweights Timor Leste and Brunei are also in Group B together with the Philippines, which is seeking a first men’s football medal in the biennial meet in Indonesia.

Defending champion Malaysia found itself in the tournament’s “Group of Death” with Thailand—which won seven straight titles until 2009, Singapore, Cambodia and host Indonesia.

“We’re lucky we have this favorable draw,” said Philippine Football Federation president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta. “There’s a good chance we can compete in this group. We hope to be in the semifinals.”

Though the final lineup has yet to be revealed, senior team members Jason de Jong, Manny Ott, Mark Hartmann and Matthew Hartmann are already in the short list of the Under-23 side that will also be coached by German Michael Weiss.

Other Europe-based standouts like goalkeeper Roland Muller and Patrick Hinrichsen from Germany, Jeff Christiaens from Belgium and Carli de Murga from Spain will also beef up the squad, together with local-based players Neckson Leonora, Raymark Fernandez and Lemuel Unabia.

Under 23 Philippine Azkals pilipinas futbolThe Under-23 side will undergo a week-long camp in Japan late this month as part of its preparation for the SEA Games.

Meanwhile, the Philippines reaped the dividends of playing more matches in October, moving up eight places to 158 in the latest rankings released by the International Football Federation (FIFA).

Boosted by victories over Macau in the Long Teng Cup in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and higher-ranked Nepal in a friendly at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, the Philippines collected 127 points in a strong finish to the year where it qualified for the AFC Challenge Cup main tournament.

“We expected to move up, but we should strive to be higher in the rankings,” said Araneta, noting that Bangladesh, a team the Azkals handily defeated, 3-0, is even ranked better than the team at 141.

The Azkals got the bulk of their points for their 4-nil hammering of Nepal, which was ranked 136 last month.

Araneta said the Azkals are better than their rankings indicate. The Fifa rankings take into consideration not only the result of the past month, but the overall performance of the national team since 2008.

“We deserve to be higher. But we are taking it one step at a time,” Araneta added.

Azkals prepare U-23 team for SEA Games medal bid

By Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines – With the Azkals’ 2011 campaign already done with, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) shifts its resources to preparing the under-23 team for its medal quest in the 26th Southeast Asian Games, which blasts off in less than three weeks in Indonesia.

From the Azkals, coach Michael Weiss goes full-time to honing up and calling the shots for the Philippines U-23 side, hoping the mix of Fil-foreign and homegrown booters will make great strides from a training camp in Gotemba, Japan next week.

“There’s really no time to rest. We have to resume training with more intensity (for the Under-23),” said Weiss, who inserted some mainstays of the U-23 team to the seniors crew (Azkals) that placed second in the recent Long Teng Cup in Chinese-Taipei.

“With the National (Seniors) team having the Long Teng Cup, the under-23 is a little bit behind. Hopefully, we can catch up in the Japan camp,” he said.

The Under-23 side will be in Gotemba, Japan from October 23-31, to train in the same facilities where the Azkals held camp last March in the buildup for their AFC Challenge Cup playoff match with Mongolia.

Weiss said they are arranging tuneup matches with strong Japanese university teams to prepare his wards for the SEA Games in Indonesia, where football’s schedule was moved to November 3 from its original November 7 kickoff.

Under 23 Philippine Azkals pilipinas futbolThree recruits based abroad, Fil-Spanish Carli de Murga, Fil-German Roland Muller and Fil-Belgian Jeffrey Christiaens, are still uncertain to join the Japan camp, according to team coordinator Jojie Ronda, but have given their commitment to play in the SEAG.

From Japan, the team will return to Manila on Oct. 31 then leave for Jakarta the following day.

Fil-Dutch Azkal Jason de Jong, Fil-German Manuel Ott, Neckson Leonora, Raymark Fernandez, David Basa and Joshua Beloya are among the other mainstays of the team.

“I think we can field an interesting squad to the SEA Games,” said Weiss. “We hope we can connect very well together in Japan in camp and go from there to Indonesia.”

Junior Philippine Azkals U23 to train in Japan before SEA Games

The Philippine Under-23 Men’s football team will hold a training camp in Japan for the final stage of their preparation for the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia.

National coach Michael Weiss said they will leave for Japan on October 24, Monday, and will head straight to Indonesia on November 2 one day before the opening of the SEA Games football competitions at the Gelora Sriwijaya Stadium on November 3 in Jakarta.

“It will be shorter because originally, we will be in Japan until November 4. So I hope the players from overseas will take notice of the schedule change and leave as soon as possible,” Weiss said.

The SEA Games football tournament was supposed to start on November 7, four days earlier than the official opening of the Games on the 11th but organizers were forced to move the opening kick-off on November 3 because of the unavailability of the football stadium in Palembang.

All football games were also moved in Jakarta with the Senayan Sports Complex as one of the venues.

Under 23 Philippine Azkals pilipinas futbolThe U-23 team trained with the senior members of the Philippine Azkals during their build-up for their recent tournament which included the Long Teng Cup.

“We have prepared the team for a longer period with the seniors team and we have given them exposure in the Long Teng Cup,” said Weiss.

The senior Azkals are currently taking a break so Weiss’ focus is now on the U-23 team which he will also be coaching.

Jason De Jong, Manny Ott, brothers Matthew and Mark Hartmann and Iloilo-based Neckson Leonora are among the top players included in the U-23 national pool.

Under-23 Philippine Azkals prove worth; Caligdong earns Golden Booth

By Cedelf P. Tupas (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

KAOHSIUNG—The vital roles played by Under-23 standouts in the Philippine Azkals’ second place finish in the Long Teng Cup should augur well for the country’s bid for a first medal in Men’s football in the Southeast Asian Games.

SEA Games-bound players Roland Muller, Jeff Christiaens, Neckson Leonora and Carli De Murga all made their senior debuts for the Azkals in the four-nation tournament won by Hong Kong Tuesday night.

“It’s a good sign that the Under-23 players can cope with the pressure of playing against senior teams of other countries, even if they are not at the level of the SEA Games teams,” said Dan Palami, who also manages the Under-23 team.

The Azkals blanked Macau, 2-0, after drawing with Hong Kong (3-3) and Chinese-Taipei (0-0) in the Long Teng Cup.

Chieffy Caligdong sparkled for the Azkals with four goals in the tournament that brought his international total to six goals for the year and 14 in his career.

Caligdong, who shrugged off injuries to score both goals against Macau, emerged the top scorer for the tournament, earning the Golden Boot trophy.

“Chieffy has been very consistent in this campaign. He just comes out and proves that you can count on him,” said Palami, who said the positives from the campaign have cushioned the impact of not winning the tournament.

“We would have wanted to win, but if you put things in the proper perspective, there are so many positives in this campaign,” said Palami.

Golden Boot winner Caligdong lifts Azkals over Macau

By Roy Moore, InterAKTV

With two goals in the second half, Chieffy Caligdong towed the Philippine national men’s football team to a victory over Macau Tuesday night at the 2011 Long Teng Cup. Showing his quality, the winger from Iloilo lifted the team by the scruff of its neck to ensure that the Azkals leave the competition with a victory, improving on last year’s haul with five points in three games.

Caligdong’s goals powered the Philippines to a second place finish in the competition, after Hong Kong surprisingly recorded the biggest victory of the tournament against Taiwan in the final game, destroying the hosts, 6-0. With Taiwan falling apart, Hong Kong was able to retain its title with seven points. The Philippines finished with five points after a win and two draws, while Taiwan had four points. Macau finished at the bottom after losing three games, as it did last year.

In the match against Macau, Caligdong entered the match as a substitute in the second half to the roar of the crowd, before making an immediate impact when he cut inside after a trademark dribble on the wing to strike the ball against the post.

Attacking intent

Long Teng CupClearly showing his attacking intent, Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss pushed his team further forward and switched the formation, with Caligdong playing as a striker for much of the half. The tactical change paid dividends when a Mark Hartmann free-kick found Caligdong unmarked at the back post, and the Iloilo native finished the rebound in the 58th minute after the Macanese goalkeeper Ho Man Fai made a good first save.

The Azkals hoped that the floodgates would open, but were only able to manage one more goal. It was Caligdong who killed the game off in the 87th minute, with Hartmann again providing the assist with a chipped through ball. Taking the pass on his chest, Caligdong set himself to drill the ball low into the right hand corner.

Caligdong could have had a hat trick if not for blazing over from only a few yards out, when Phil Younghusband played him in during injury time. But with four goals, Caligdong came away with the tournament’s Golden Boot award, an honor for the top scorer of the competition.

The Azkals were missing Angel Guirado, who was out due to suspension. The creative spark in the middle of the field fell to Hartmann, who surprisingly started — and played 90 minutes — a day after getting benched and being involved in a Twitter controversy. Weiss’ diplomacy and mind games seemed effective, as the Filipino-Briton Hartmann went on to assist on both of Caligdong’s goals.

First half woes

Early in the match, the Azkals bombarded Macau’s goal, but only managed to fashion one clear-cut chance. With 71 percent of the possession, the Azkals were clearly the dominant force, but building up the play from the back, they opted for too many long balls.

The best chance of the first half fell to Ian Araneta, after a bursting run and delicate through-ball from Jerry Christiaens on the 28th minute. But Araneta, the top scorer for the Philippines in last year’s Long Teng Cup, failed to open his account this time around, as he saw his shot tipped round the post by a fine save from Macau keeper Ho Man Fai.

Macau threatened late in the half after Leong Ka-hang was sent through and shot for the first time just outside the area, only to watch his shot shave the crossbar.

Phil Younghusband frequently drifted wide, and the new signee of the Loyola Meralco Sparks FC was able beat the defense cross into the box. But with only Araneta to aim for, Macau’s center back were able to cope with the aerial threat.

Young guns steps up

While the overall feeling will be one of slight frustration, as the Azkals failed to hit top gear and the dream of winning the Long Teng Cup faded, there are certainly positives to take from the game. The performances of 22-year-old Neckson Leonora, 21-year-old Jason De Jong and 23-year-old Roland Müller will give great hope for the Philippine side in the upcoming Under-23 tournament at the SEA games.

But it was 20-year-old Jeffrey Christiaens’ performance that stood out most. With some great skill flicking the ball past several defenders and beating his marker on numerous occasions, he provided the best chance of the first half to Araneta while constantly offering a threat on the left wing.

Prior to the game, Christiaens has earned comparisons to Caligdong, although the Fil-Belgian’s skill differs in offering a fluid passing and moving style with more technically skilled tricks, compared to the dynamic, raw speed of the veteran internationalist.

But the presence of the two men could certainly give the Philippines wings who offer distinctly dangerous threats on the flanks.

What’s next

With only two defeats in the last ten games, the Philippines go into the friendlies against Singapore and Nepal with the strongest team it has ever had in recent generations. Though this was the Azkals’ first win in five games, the team remains a difficult force to beat with five draws and three wins in the last ten games, only losing to highly-ranked Kuwait.

With Stephan Schrock, Dennis Cagara, Jerry Lucena, Ray Jonsson and Manny Ott returning to action, the Philippines will be on full display against Singapore. Speaking for the last year of the potential of the Azkals, the team now has an opportunity to turn that into reality, as it looks to advance and become challengers in Southeast Asia. Against three-time Suzuki Cup champions Singapore on October 7, the Azkals could do just that.

Philippines finishes 2nd in 2011 Long Teng Cup

Despite a knee injury, Chieffy Caligdong came up with crucial goals to lead the Philippine Azkals to a 2-0 victory over Macau in the 2011 Long Teng Cup.

The Filipino winger, who sat out the first half due to his injury, struck his first goal in the 58th minute off a pass by Mark Hartmann.

Hartmann floated in a free kick towards Caligdong, who went in for a goal attempt.

His initial try was saved by Macau’s goal keeper but he went after the ball and scored on the follow up.

Caligdong slid in another goal in the 87th minute, again off a pass from Hartmann.

Caligdong received the ball with his chest then went for the strike to make it 2-0 for the Philippines.

The Azkals had a lot of ball possessions in the first half, but just could not convert against Macau.

Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss later decided to let Caligdong play, and he nearly had a goal early in the second half.

Philippine Football Federation PFF logoCaligdong almost pulled off a hat trick (3 goals in a game) in the first minute of the injury time, but missed on his attempt.

In the end, the Azkals had 27 shots at the goal against Macau’s 8. Ten of those shots were on target.

The Azkals also enjoyed 67% of the ball possession, while Macau only had 33%.

The Philippines eventually finished 2nd in the tournament.

Hong Kong scored a total of 7 points to retain the title. Chinese Taipei settled for 3rd place with 4 points, while scoreless Macau ended up at 4th.

Caligdong was declared the “Golden Boot” winner of Long Teng Cup with 4 goals. He duplicated Ian Araneta’s feat in the 2010 edition of the tournament.
